…and how the sky gets heavy when you are underneath it.
Now to be honest, I didn’t think I was going to think much of the Re-Release by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. I picked it up at Easy Street purely to support our local music and hoped to find a few gems. Well rest assured I found more than a few. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not sold on every song on the EP, but there are far more wins than loses. It’s so incredibly real. I’m not one to be completely sold on a lot of rap or hip hop, but there are a few artists that I can handle, but only if they truly mean something within
what they write. There are so many rappers out there are write nothing but shitty lyrics about their so called lives. It’s disgusting if you’re understanding what I’m implying. I can’t stand it. But every so often that 1 out of a 100 pops up and writes something real, with emotion and sick, but different beats. Take Life Is A Cinema, and Kings off of the EP. They are so different from each other, from lyrical content to the beat, the instruments used, as well as vocalists. The best part about Macklemore is that he doesn’t just stick to midi samples; so much more goes into it besides just sitting behind a computer and clicking away at different settings. I could talk about that aspect of the EP for ages, but I’ll just stick with saying that that is something to appreciate. So far from my listens through, Life Is A Cinema and Ryan’s remix of Otherside are my favorites off the album. You don’t have to fit inside that box to be noticed. Let’s break that mold.
“Use the cement from rock bottom and make it musical
So the people can relate to where I’ve been,
Where I’m going, what I’ve seen, what I’ve heard
From the guts, fuck the glory
Just a person on a porch putting it all into recording
Many in my past and many that came before me
I just keep walkin’ my path and blessed to share my story”
